Krka national park

Either at Skradin city – romantic Mediterranean town full of narrow paved streets, passages, vaults and stairs or Lozovac which is closer to waterfalls.

Facts

• The Plitvice lakes consist of 16 lakes, joined together like a series of steps. The first lake is at 636 m above sea level, and the last is 133 m lower. They are linked by waterfalls and cascades.
• The lakes mainly lie in a south-north direction, are 8 km long and cover an area of 2 km2. The deepest lake is 46 m deep. They are divided into two groups: the Upper (12 lakes), formed ofdolomite rock, which are broad and surrounded by a peaceful landscape; and the Lower (4 lakes)formed from limestone.
• The area around the River Krka has been declared a National Park because of its natural beauty and its geological characteristics (an area of karst rock). The river rises 43 km (as the crow flies) from Šibenik, beneath the best-known mountain in Croatia and Dalmatia, Dinara.
• The Krka is 73 km long in all, of wich the first part flows through plains (13 km) the second (40 km) through a canyon and the final stage forms lakes joined to the sea.
